Welp sepia clouds peal off the road and dance in their wake. And the hair of our faithful companions is pulled back while the sun glints their shades. Lord only knows the troubles and adventures these two have encountered. Getting skinny for windows, running out of bars unscathed and borrowing food. Work is for the employed and these two have none of it. The last crumpled dollars roll around in the jar glued to the dash but according to their drawn map they will be homeward bound soon.

 

Stripes and plaid and overalls and bare feet making the pedal fall.

 

The carefree companions crush miles and pavement as their car screams towards nowhere in particular as they chuckle over memories and realize, “home is wherever I’m with you.”

Gathering of the Vibes recap

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the love and substance festival known as the Gathering of the Vibes.

Some of the headliners of this event were Crosby, Stills, Nash, Bob Weir, Buddy Guy, moe., George Clinton and P Funk, and the beautiful Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.

Some highlights from the show include Deep Banana Blackout, playing their original funk roots music for a hometown crowd on Friday night. Friday night also saw the takeover from Lettuce, a super talented funk outfit.

Now when thousands of people get together to imbibe in music and excess I usually don't take out my camera but I made an exception for Sunday afternoon. Here are some of my favorite pictures from the Grace Potter set.





It was a week from Buddy Guy's 73rd birthday last Sunday and the guy can still rip. He was full of admiration for sexy ladies and guitar riffs. He knows his priorities.

Minimalism @ MassMOCA

Steve Reich was a pioneer of classical minimalism, and his masterpiece, Music for Eighteen Musicians, altered the course of contemporary music forever. The Eighteen musicians are: a violin, a cello, a metallophone, two xylophones, two clarinets, three marimbas, four pianos, and four female vocalists. The piece centers around eleven chords that spiral around one another with instruments fading in and out, melodies aligning and maligning. The individual musicians hold the pulsing chord while the others deconstruct it until you almost forget where you started - which in the end is precisely where you end up.

This Saturday, Bang on a Can will perform Music for 18 Musicians at the MassMOCA in North Adams, MA. It's a show that is guaranteed to bring down the house. Here's just a taste:

Today and tomorrow, July 17-18, is the VT Brewers Fest in Burlington, VT at Waterfront Park. They have 37 different craft breweries attending from all over the NE. I'd come Saturday night if I were you so that you may enjoy fresh poured Otter Creek from your favorite WRMC summer managers.

Explosions in Central Park

So a few weeks ago Ward and I went to see Explosions in the Sky in Central Park. It was the Austin band's 10th anniversary show and despite the opening of the heavens, the chitter-chatter audience, and a few technical problems the show was fantastic. I was pleasantly surprised by how well their movement-oriented epic songwriting carries over to the live show format. They didn't stop playing once between songs and left the meaningless banter to the openers, The Constantines. The setlist was as follows.
